- Mining Green Gold
Building a Purposeful Social Enterprise that is good for people, planet, and profits. One of the biggest challenges of our future generations is going to be food security. With ever increasing population, climate change, limited arable land, chances are we will run out of space to grow enough food for everyone. One of the key ingredients of all cuisine is vegetable oil–from your favorite French fries, to fried chicken, cakes, biscuits, chips, chocolates, candies, faux meat, even salad dressings. SawitPRO is a green AgriTech company that we launched at the start of 2023 with the explicit purpose of making vegetable oil–more specifically Palm Oil–sustainable and more productive. More oil, less land. Earlier in May, I had the pleasure to roll out our very first platform to our customers. I spent all of this week in Riau meeting SawitPRO customers–Palm oil mills, agents, suppliers, etc. And I am happy to say we signed a few mills and agents to use our application. Not only are they using the application to buy and sell fresh fruit bunches (FFBs), but they also are using it to earn loyalty points and redeem in exchange for agriculture inputs like fertilizer. Fig 1: Fresh Fruit Bunch of a Oil Palm Tree Fig 2: Agreement signed with CPO mills to partner with SawitPRO Fig 3: Launch of our fertilizer redemption program Fig 4: Our customers collecting fertilizer from SawitPRO SawitPRO can now proudly say that our platform has officially launched and we are successfully out of our beta stage into general availability. We have real customers willing to use our platform and benefits are for all to see. We digitize the fragmented palm oil supply chain to build more loyalty and trust amongst suppliers unlocking hidden value. This value is, in turn shared with our partners and customers to increase productivity of the palm oil plantations by selling quality fertilizer. Over time, this virtuous cycle continues to unlock more and more value, thereby making more money (profits) for all the actors (people) in the oil palm supply chain, without increasing the need for more land (planet). Good for planet, people and profits because SawitPRO helps its customers buy more FFB, sell more FFB, grow more FFB thereby making more money for everyone. I am happy to say that the green gold mining has begun. And we welcome all partners, friends, colleagues, industry players, technology companies to work together with us on our journey. A journey that is full of meaning and purpose to ensure food security for generations to come while ensuring higher land productivity and poverty alleviation. It has just begun! And we are looking for wings to fly. Would you help us?
- Kisah PT MUS: Meniti Keberhasilan Sebagai Agen DO
Halo, pembaca SawitBlog! - Navigating the Chaotic Startup Journey with Passion, Pride, and Proactivity
Why startups are inherently chaotic and how the great can navigate throughout the journey with passion , pride and, proactive to achieve perfection. Embracing the Chaos Picture this: you have meticulously crafted a business plan, ironed out the tiniest details, and even made color-coded spreadsheets. But here's the kicker–most of the time, none of that matters. Why? Because startups thrive on change, and conditions on the ground shift with the agility of a chameleon changing colors. Your well-thought-out plan may become as relevant as a floppy disk in the age of cloud computing. Contrast this with the corporate world, where structured, formal approaches and well-defined KPIs rule the day. Each employee knows their role, and every action is geared toward meeting strategic objectives. But in the startup realm, flexibility and adaptability are the name of the game. The 3Ps for Perfection: Passion, Pride, and Proactivity So, how do you not just survive but thrive in this chaos? The answer lies in the three essential qualities we call the "3Ps for Perfection": Passion, Pride, and Proactivity. These qualities are the secret sauce that fuels success in the world of startups. Fig 1. 3Ps for Perfection Passion Passion is the fire in your belly, the deep love, and enthusiasm for what you do. It is that magnetic force that keeps you motivated to learn, grow, and innovate. Pride Pride is not about being arrogant or self-centered; it is about embracing the genuine satisfaction that comes from valuing both yourself and your work. It is the deep-seated knowledge that you have poured your heart and soul into your endeavors, leaving no room for regrets. When you take pride in yourself and your work, you are not only willing but eager to go that extra mile, transforming ordinary tasks into something truly exceptional. It is not merely about accomplishing tasks; it is about consistently delivering outstanding quality. Proactivity Proactivity means taking initiative and seizing control of your destiny. When you are proactive, you identify and address problems before they morph into insurmountable obstacles. You are not just a passenger on this chaotic journey–you are the captain of your ship, steering it toward success. Striving for Excellence Perfection is a lofty goal, and in the unpredictable world of startups, it is not always attainable. But by striving for the 3Ps,you can achieve a remarkable level of excellence in your work. Let's take a closer look at each one: Fig 2. - Passion, Pride, Proactivity: The Power Trio Reshaping Palm Oil Industry
3Ps for Perfection to reshape the palm oil industry landscape Embracing the Chaos The agritech and palm oil industry, like many others, has its fair share of unpredictability. Markets fluctuate, climate patterns shift, and consumer preferences evolve. In such an ever-changing landscape, embracing the chaos is a prerequisite for success. That's where passion, pride, and proactivity come into play. Today, we embark on a journey to explore how three seemingly simple attributes—Passion, Pride, and Proactivity (3Ps), are reshaping the agritech and palm oil industry. These qualities are not just words; they are the guiding stars that lead us toward perfection and, in doing so, transform entire sectors. Fig 1. When we take pride in what we do, it is evident in the quality of our output. It is about going the extra mile, ensuring that every task is not just completed but completed exceptionally well. In agritech and palm oil, pride translates into elevating excellence to unprecedented levels. Consider the palm oil farmer who takes immense pride in cultivating the finest oil palms, employing sustainable farming practices, and contributing to the global food supply. Or the agritech engineer who pours their heart into designing precision agriculture tools that optimize resource use and minimize waste. Pride inspires us to create a legacy of excellence. Fig 4. Palm Oil Plantation Worker Uses Egrek (Traditional Harvesting Tools) Proactivity: Pioneering Change Proactivity is not just about adapting to change; it is about pioneering it. In the agritech and palm oil industry, being proactive means identifying challenges before they become crises and seizing opportunities before they fade away. - Navigating Challenges: How Drivers Keep the Palm Oil Supply Chain Moving
Striving on the road, drivers have an important role to navigate the delivery of oil palm fruit to mills. These drivers often find themselves working with various stakeholders, including Koperasi Unit Desa (KUD), agents, and independent farmers. The palm oil supply chain is highly diverse, encompassing both plasma estates and independent farms, each with its own intricate operations. For drivers, their income is tied to the tonnage they transport per trip, creating a direct incentive to efficiently manage their deliveries while ensuring the safe and timely transportation of oil palm fruit from the plantations to the processing facilities. The motivation of the drivers is key to carrying out their daily operations. One of their primary goals is to maximize the number of daily trips they can undertake. On average, they target completing approximately three regular trips each day, assuming there are no unexpected delays or obstacles. This pursuit of efficiency is not solely driven by their personal objectives, but also by their aspiration to earn favor with their employer, such as Koperasi Unit Desa (KUD). Those drivers who consistently exhibit efficiency and dependability are more likely to receive extra driving opportunities, which boosts their income and job stability in turn. Another aspect of motivation for drivers is the need to maintain trusted relationships with the farmers who rent their trucks. These farmers rely on the drivers to transport their valuable palm oil produce to processing facilities or markets. Building and nurturing these trusted partnerships is essential, as it ensures a steady flow of business for the drivers. Moreover, it enhances their reputation within the close-knit community of farmers and transporters, further solidifying their position in the industry. In this fiercely competitive environment, the motivation to excel and maintain these vital relationships is a driving force behind the success of drivers in the palm oil industry. Let’s Meet Real-life Driver: Nurcholis Nurcholis, the dedicated driver for a particular KUD (Koperasi Unit Desa), follows a precise 10-day rotation schedule–ensuring that every 10 days, he returns to the same area. Begins promptly at 8 am to commence at the initial harvesting points with fixed workdays (every Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays) with the remainder of the week off-duty. Remarkably efficient, Nurcholis manages to complete his route within a span of 1.5 to 2 hours, collecting an impressive 7 to 8 metric tons of produce. To optimize his route and stay informed, Nurcholis relies on a WhatsApp (WA) group for drivers. This group serves as a vital source of information, offering updates on mill queues and road conditions. Over time, Nurcholis has honed his expertise in understanding the unique characteristics of each mill he delivers to, such as road conditions and queue times. This wealth of experience equips him with the knowledge needed to anticipate the time required for each delivery, ensuring the fruits reach its destination effectively. His income as a driver reflects his dedication and versatility. The revenue depends on several factors, primarily the distance he travels and the type of materials he transports. However, Nurcholis doesn't limit his income solely to these standard rates. On his days off, he seizes opportunities to generate additional revenue. He utilizes his truck to transport building materials, tapping into a different sector of the transportation industry. It's important to note that Nurcholis's revenue isn't entirely his to keep. Like many drivers, he operates within a system where he pays a portion of his earnings to the truck's owner. In Nurcholis's case, he hands over 18% of his revenue to cover expenses such as fuel and maintenance, which are the responsibility of the truck's owner. This arrangement ensures that both Nurcholis and the truck owner share in the operational costs while also benefiting from the revenue generated through their joint efforts. Drivers: Facing The Challenges Drivers in the palm oil industry face a multitude of pains and challenges that significantly affect their livelihoods. Lengthy delays stemming from queues at processing mills or adverse road conditions can have a severe impact on their income, as time spent waiting can result in lost opportunities for additional deliveries. Moreover, the risk of getting stuck on poorly maintained roads is a constant concern, especially for overweight trucks tasked with transporting vast quantities of palm fruit bunches (FFBs). Additionally, drivers must contend with malpractices within the industry, where powerful agents can exert their influence to manipulate prices at processing mills, further eroding the already fragile income of these hardworking individuals. Thus, any helpful forms of support are needed for drivers to overcome the challenges they face, such as assistance in optimizing FFB collection route efficiency and optimizing FFB truck capacity based on road conditions (for example, when trucks get stuck in mud). Therefore, it is hoped that there will be relevant parties willing to help improve the well-being of drivers in the future. Cheers to the drivers!

Having a land starting from 2 hectares, it’s natural for them to have a deep-rooted commitment to their land, also a desire to ensure its continued fertility on their plantations. Some of them are former plasma holders who have chosen to expand their land independently, while the agents and sub-agents have influenced them in promoting self-sustainability among these enterprising individuals. What sets them apart from other farmers is their ability to sell their fresh fruit bunches (FFB) directly to agents and sub-agents. As the driving force behind the sustainable growth of their agricultural enterprise, their dedication is primarily centered on two key aspects: planting and securing funding. These farmers recognize the critical role of efficient replanting in preserving and enhancing the vitality of their crops, thus bringing them closer to their agricultural aspirations. Then, the ambitions encompass not only obtaining the necessary financial resources for their plantations, but also addressing their daily necessities and securing a prosperous future for their families. Their motivation stems from their desire to create a promising future for their children, utilizing their agricultural expertise to establish additional income streams that can support the educational aspect, spanning from primary school to university. In doing so, it’s important to ensure that their family's hopes and opportunities flourish alongside the expansion of their agricultural holdings. Meet a Real-life Independent Farmer: Silitonga Silitonga, a resilient independent farmer, is fueled by an unwavering drive for growth and self-reliance. By harnessing the power of the internet and his own previous experiences, he tends by his best to learn best practices in cultivation, optimizing his crop yields and efficiency. He also recognizes the value of formal institutions or plasma centers in enhancing his knowledge and skills. Thus, he integrates the insights by gaining from these institutions into his independent farming practices, striving to improve his yields and financial stability. His incoming cash flow primarily relies on his ability to sell fresh fruit bunches (FFB) to agents or sub-agents, which form the backbone of its revenue stream. Aside from daily needs, his income is also used for plantation expenses, including daily wages for workers involved in pruning and fertilization, also for those who are doing crucial harvesting tasks. Additionally, Silitionga must allocate funds to pay drivers responsible for transporting the harvested yield. Balancing these income and outcome factors is essential for him to maintain a sustainability of profitable agricultural enterprise, as this is a part of the way to live. However, despite his pursuit of knowledge and improvement with the help from plasma farmers, Silitonga remains reluctant to become a full-fledged contract as plasma farmer due to concerns about long-term commitments. Instead, he prefers the role of a partner, seeking arrangements that offer clearer and more transparent. In addition to planting and securing funding, he wants to maintain his autonomy in the agricultural landscape, as this is part of his reason for being an independent farmer. Facing the Challenges: Funds, Knowledge, and Resource To embark this journey, the independent farmers face monumental challenges stemming from limited funds, knowledge, and resources. One of a myriad of pains and challenges that often hinder their agricultural endeavors is the limited options for mills to process their crops, which can severely constrain their growth potential. Moreover, short-term misactions can have enduring consequences, affecting the quality of their produce in the long run. These farmers often grapple with a lack of access to modern equipment and best agricultural practices, which further impedes their ability to optimize their yields. Another challenge for them is the financial burden of replanting, coupled with the loss of income and incentives during this process, thus adding to their woes. Additionally, the high cost of planting inputs, such as fertilizers, can eat into their already limited profits. Furthermore, independent farmers often find themselves earning lower incomes from their fresh fruit bunches (FFB) due to stringent quality standards, making it difficult to break free from the cycle of financial hardship. This cycle of instability is further exacerbated by their difficulty in accessing loans, as banks view them as higher-risk borrowers. That’s why, as an ideal start, it's essential for them to be more proactive in seeking valuable agricultural knowledge and insights. These enterprising individuals aggressively seek agricultural information and tips, often turning to fellow plasma farmers, mill employees, and the vast realm of social media. But, their limited financial resources make them vulnerable to purchasing counterfeit agricultural inputs, a situation that can significantly impact their yields and profitability. To address this issue, they diligently integrate the knowledge they acquire from sources such as Koperasi Unit Desa (KUD) or contract farming arrangements, applying these insights to enhance their independent farming operations. What do you think about this? Are you interested in having your own palm oil plantation one day? It is not an easy road, but the experiences they have gained are truly invaluable. - Harvesters: The Unsung Heroes of Agriculture
Overview As the upstream part of palm oil production, the harvesters play a crucial role in the manual harvesting of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) from oil palm trees. Starting as early as 7 AM, they are armed with tools like sickles or machetes, skillfully cutting down ripe FFB to ensure the quality of the harvest. With varying employment agreements, some work directly under farmers on a monthly or biweekly salary basis, while others choose project-based work under vendors, receiving compensation per completed project. Their tireless efforts are integral to the palm oil supply chain, contributing to the production of this valuable commodity. Harvesters play a vital role in the palm oil industry by performing several key tasks. Their primary objective is to harvest ripe fresh fruit bunches (FFB) from oil palm trees, ensuring a continuous and uninterrupted supply to sustain the palm oil production process. To maintain the trust of the farmers who employ them, harvesters must consistently deliver high-quality work. This includes careful and precise harvesting techniques to not only ensure the longevity of their tools but also prioritizeprioritise their own safety in the inherently hazardous environment of the palm oil plantations. In essence, their duties go beyond manual labour; they are custodians of both the palm oil supply chain and their own well-being. Let's Meet Real-life Harvester: Febri Let's meet a real-life harvester, Febri, who operates in Afdeling 9, Berumbung Baru, Kabupaten Siak, Riau, alongside his brother and wife. Febri's work encompasses not only the manual harvesting of fresh fruit bunches but also the management of cattle, a testament to the multifaceted nature of his role. Living in close proximity to the estate, Febri's earnings provide a glimpse into the economic aspects of his profession. He receives Rp1.500.000 per lot, amounting to Rp33.000.000 per month when working with a single farmer. Additionally, his income receives a boost from livestock management, particularly when he sells male cows, with earnings ranging from Rp9.000.000 to Rp16.000.000 per year. Febri's workday starts at 8 AM, allowing him to dedicate his mornings to tending to his cattle. Febri's wife plays a pivotal role in the operation, overseeing the gathered fresh fruit bunches (FFB) and meticulously collecting their fruitlets for sale. Remarkably, the farmer's duties extend beyond the plantation, as he operates independently and relies on trust for the smooth operation of his tasks. One notable convenience is their access to the internet while on the farm, thanks to the presence of network towers in the area. This connectivity enables them to engage with social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube, highlighting the integration of modern technology into the daily routines of these dedicated harvesters. He has faced a number of challenges that test their skills and creativity. One of the most prominent challenges is the height of the oil palm trees themselves, making it very difficult to reach the fresh fruit bunches (FFB) located high above. To overcome this issue, Febri uses fiberfibre poles, long sticks used to extend their reach. However, even such simple tools come with his own challenges, especially in terms of cost. When a fiberfibre pole breaks during the harvesting process, it not only hampers his efficiency but also adds an additional financial burden. Moreover, the tools he relies on to cut and collect FFB are vulnerable to wear and tear, often breaking easily under the demands of their strenuous work. These challenges underscore the physical and economic hurdles that must be overcome in his daily efforts. Despite facing various challenges, there are several motivations that keep him dedicated as a harvester. One significant motivation is the desire to maximise his earnings for not only bolsters their financial well-being, but also supports his family in the economic aspect. Additionally, he has embraced modern convenience by shopping through e-commerce platforms like Lazada, showcasing his adaptability in blending traditional agricultural practices with contemporary technologies to improve quality of life. These motivations not only reflect his commitment, but also highlight the ability to balance economic aspirations with the demands of his profession. Their Life: Interesting Behaviour In terms of skills and capabilities, harvesters don't just possess knowledge of harvesting; they also demonstrate muscular strength by handling some heavy tools (callednamed egrak ) and fresh fruit bunches (FFB) weighing at least eight kilograms. Nonetheless, they must stay alert to unforeseen accidents that could potentially disrupt their work. These accidents not only result in injuries, but also entail the expense of replacing their tools, since these tools are personal possessions. Furthermore, pursuing a career as harvesters holds promising prospects, even becoming affluent enough to afford their own cars. Nevertheless, some of them encounter certain difficulties, such as poor financial management and theft of FFB during periods of high prices. Therefore, effective financial management and vigilant oversight of FFB are necessary to mitigate the risk of losses, ensuring the well-being of harvesters and sustaining production of palm oil. As the unsung heroes of agriculture, harvesters play an intriguing and motivating role through their dedicated efforts. Their journey has been far from easy in contributing to both their families and the sustainable production of palm oil. Therefore, SawitBlog invites you to explore more similar stories. Kudos for the harvesters!
